OpenNovel Master Mode update: extend outlines, pause and resume batch drafting
The hardest part of a long AI writing task is often not a failed attempt. It is not knowing what the system is doing—or whether an interruption means starting the entire job again.
This Master Mode update focuses on both problems. A book outline can now keep growing after the first batch, while batch chapter drafting becomes a task you can understand, stop, and continue.
Extend the outline you already have
After completing the first part of a book outline, you can choose how many chapters to generate next. OpenNovel shows the exact chapter range before generation and leaves confirmed outline content unchanged.
Three actions that used to be easy to confuse now have separate meanings:
- Continue the outline adds new chapters after the existing plan.
- Retry unfinished chapters fills only the part that did not finish last time.
- Clear and regenerate is the deliberate start-over action that replaces the current outline.
If you have planned six chapters and want to explore what comes next, you no longer need to regenerate the entire book just to add a few more.
Blank chapters are filled before new ones are added
Manually adding a chapter can leave a placeholder with a chapter number but no summary or story beats. Previously, that placeholder could be mistaken for a completed outline chapter, causing generation to skip past it.
Blank chapters no longer advance outline progress. If chapters one through six are complete, chapter seven is blank, and you request two chapters, OpenNovel now tells you it will start at chapter seven and generates chapters seven and eight—not chapters eight and nine while leaving a hole behind.
The repaired blank chapter counts toward the number you selected. Any chapter that already contains a valid outline is preserved.
Outline generation no longer looks frozen
While Master Mode builds an outline, the workspace now shows the chapter range being processed and the amount of content received so far. When the model is still assembling a result, the interface makes it clear that work is continuing instead of leaving you with an unexplained wait.
Each validated batch is saved as soon as it is ready. If a later batch runs into a problem, completed chapters remain available and a retry starts from the unfinished portion.
The batch drafting panel is about progress and control
The floating panel for batch chapter drafting no longer fills up with the complete text of every finished chapter. Manuscripts remain in their chapters; the panel focuses on the questions that matter during a long task:
- Which chapter is being processed?
- Is OpenNovel preparing, writing, saving, or organizing editorial notes?
- Why is there a pause before the next chapter starts?
- How much of the batch is complete?
The work between chapters—saving the result, preparing notes, and carrying context forward—now appears as a named phase instead of an unexplained delay.
Stop safely and resume from a saved checkpoint
You can stop a batch task while it is running. OpenNovel first preserves completed chapters and the current chapter’s progress, then prevents the remaining chapters from starting. Stopping does not throw away work that is already ready.
When you continue later, the task resumes from its saved checkpoint. Completed chapters are not generated again, and an interrupted chapter does not have to be rewritten from the beginning.
Temporary generation problems follow the same principle: the interface shows where the task paused and keeps recoverable results available. You can review what has already been written before deciding when to continue.
A Master Mode built for real long-form work
The core workflow is unchanged: see the whole-book outline first, then turn it into chapters. What has changed is that the workflow no longer expects everything to finish in one uninterrupted run—or asks you to give up control while a long task is active.
